WIACT Delegation to Exchange Visits with University of Arizona Linguists

Rashid Iddrisu, WIACT CEO, plans to travel to University of Arizona (UA) in Tucson, USA, with two Sawla residents to receive training in the studios of the Linguistics Department of UA from Professor Wilson de Lima Silva who directs the programs in native language documentation and preservation. The trip will prepare them to host Professors de Lima Silva (shown below) and Mette Brogden, along with Linguistics PH.D. student Kevan Joe who is from the Navajo tribe in Arizona in a two week visit to northern Ghana beginning at the end of August 2021. The UA team will provide a one-week training for Savannah-Region participants in documenting their native languages. The initial focus is on Gonja and a dialect of Lobi that is spoken in Sawla, but community members from this region can participate and work on their own tribal languages.
